Christantus Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the last 16, especially following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
