The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
