Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
