The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
